Singapore: The Lion City

Overview
June 2025

We’ve been to Singapore many times over the years and I’m going to capture the learning from those trips into this first blog post on Singapore!

Singapore is a magical place! It is a sunny, tropical island in South-east Asia, just off the southern tip of Malaysia. The city-state is 710 square kilometers and is inhabited by five million people from four major communities – Chinese (majority), Malay, Indian and Eurasian.

Singapore, Asia’s smallest country, is also referred to as the “Lion City” and it has so much to offer – amazing food, cultural melting pot, incredible architecture, lots of shopping, great hotels, a vibrant nightlife, jungle, beaches, outdoor activities, and more!

It’s one of my favorite places in the world (although I have many 😊).

Everyone should go at least once!

Language

It is not uncommon that people ask us how we communicate when in Singapore. It’s no problem at all! While Malay is the official language of Singapore, English is the de facto language and the language in which almost all business is done.

It is a country of many languages though and most residents speak multiple languages.

Currency

The currency used in Singapore is the Singapore Dollar (SGD). While there are many countries in Southeast Asia that are cheap and full of bargains, Singapore is the fifth richest city in the world and second richest city in Asia (2023) – so not the bargain location like countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam. You will find all of the uber high end stores in Singapore catering to the wealthy who come to stay and shop here.

Weather

Singapore is close to the equator, so the climate remains pretty much the same all year round. It has a tropical climate, with frequent rain, high and uniform temperatures, and high humidity. The mean temperature in Singapore is 26.7 °C or 80.0 °F. The temperature ranges from 75 °F. to 89 °F. Each year, there is approximately 2366 mm or 93.1 inches of rain and humidity averages 84%.
